Registering as a poultry keeper
Not established from the sources checked
Jurisdiction: Greece
Applies to: Poultry keepers: commercial poultry holdings (national register as published) and laying-hen installations; small private flocks under the EU baseline.
Outside this finding's scope
- A Greek rule specific to private, non-commercial flocks was not found in the texts read.
What the checked sources say
- A 2021 ministerial decision sets up a national electronic register for commercial poultry holdings as defined in PD 33/2008.
- Owners of those holdings apply after construction and before operating approval or the first stocking, and must report changes, including temporary or permanent cessation, within 7 days.
- Greece’s laying-hen unit approval and distinguishing number (PD 216/2003) do not apply to installations with fewer than 350 laying hens; the 2026 procedure page says the same.
- Under EU Regulation 2016/429, operators of establishments keeping poultry, including birds kept to produce eggs for consumption, notify the competent authority for registration. Greece’s use of the optional EU exemption for low-risk establishments was not found in the texts read.
- No Greek registration rule written for private, non-commercial flocks was found in the sources checked on 25 October 2026; ask the ΔΑΟΚ of your Regional Unit.
- The laying-hen unit approval procedure lists a €15 state fee that varies by Regional Unit; fees for private flocks are not established.
- The register decision is cited as published in 2021 and amended in 2022; later amendments were not inventoried.

The scope and conditions below are a dated record, not confirmation of today's position.
Rule identified for the scope below
Uses housing orders in this scope: Yes, according to the checked evidence.
Jurisdiction: Greece
Applies to: Household poultry (οικόσιτα πουλερικά) under the national 2008 bird-flu biosecurity decision as amended in 2017, and regional extensions by the Regions’ veterinary services.
What the checked sources say
- A 2017 amendment to the national 2008 bird-flu biosecurity decision prohibits keeping household poultry in open yards, fields or other open spaces less than 2 km from wetlands, rivers, lakes or other bodies of water.
- Regional veterinary services may widen that distance in high-risk areas, up to the whole region.
- The 2017 amendment took effect on publication; no consolidated text was reached, so later changes are not ruled out.
- Regional decisions taking stricter measures are notified to the competent central directorate of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
- For example, in April 2026 the Kastoria Regional Unit told keepers that household poultry within 2 km of Lake Orestiada, the Aliakmonas and other water bodies must be kept only indoors. That is a past regional measure, not a current status.
- Current measures for a particular area are not established here; check your Region’s veterinary services.

Small-flock welfare minimums
Not established from the sources checked
Jurisdiction: Greece
Applies to: Animals kept for food production or other farming purposes, which includes private flocks kept for eggs.
Outside this finding's scope
- Animals living in the wild; animals for competitions, shows, cultural or sporting events; experimental animals; invertebrates.
- Pure companion keeping is not determined.
What the checked sources say
- As published, PD 374/2001 requires owners or keepers to take all appropriate measures for their animals’ welfare and to ensure they suffer no unnecessary pain, suffering or injury.
- Animals in systems that depend on frequent human attention must be inspected at least once a day; others at intervals sufficient to avoid suffering.
- PD 216/2003, which sets the detailed laying-hen rules, does not apply to installations with fewer than 350 laying hens; it says those installations remain subject to PD 374/2001.
- A government procedure page updated on 14 October 2026 still cites articles 5 and 7 of PD 374/2001; whether the 2001 text is unamended is not established.

National or state rules on keeping poultry
Not established from the sources checked
Jurisdiction: Greece
Applies to: Keeping household poultry and other household animals.
What the checked sources say
- As published in 2017, the national biosecurity amendment prohibits household poultry in unfenced spaces throughout the country; a regional authority cited it in April 2026, but whether it is still in force unchanged is not established. It does not grant general permission to keep chickens in fenced places.
- National livestock-installation licensing excludes household animal rearing, according to the national procedures register (updated 14 October 2026).
- National law refers to each Regional Governor’s decisions on keeping household animals, which set the capacity allowed (Law 4056/2012, art. 17α(1)). Ask the ΔΑΟΚ of your Regional Unit for the limits that apply where you live.
- A complete national rule permitting or prohibiting chicken keeping at a property has not been established; municipal rules were not checked.
