Keeping your flock
These findings cover the national or state scope stated below. They do not determine whether chickens are allowed at a particular home. City zoning, property restrictions and other local rules are outside this research.
Registering as a poultry keeper
Rule identified for the scope below
Jurisdiction: Liechtenstein
Applies to: Holdings keeping domestic poultry under the adopted TSV: captive Galliformes, Anseriformes and Struthioniformes.
Outside this finding's scope
- This species definition is specific to the TSV registration rules, not every pet bird or every bird species. The designated domestic registration route, fee and any exceptional route remain unresolved.
What the checked sources say
- The adopted duty covers all holdings keeping domestic poultry, without a minimum flock-size exception in that duty.
- Registration information includes the keeper’s name and address, holding location, address and coordinates, poultry species and housing form.
- Notify a new holding, change of keeper or dissolution within ten working days.
- A separate new-flock stocking notice within ten days applies to laying-hen holdings with more than 1,000 places. This is distinct from the all-holdings registration duty.
Thresholds
- No minimum flock-size exception appears in the all-holdings registration duty.
- The separate laying-hen stocking-notice threshold is more than 1,000 places; it is not a registration threshold for smaller flocks.

Housing-order finding as checked on 2026-10-08
The scope and conditions below are a dated record, not confirmation of today's position.
Not established from the sources checked
Uses housing orders in this scope: Not established from the sources checked.
Jurisdiction: Liechtenstein
Applies to: The evidenced general disease-control powers and historical bird-flu ordinance; a complete housing-order finding is not established here.
Outside this finding's scope
- The historical ordinance does not prove present absence of restrictions. No current area, issue date, effective date or expiry is assigned.
What the checked sources say
- ALKVW has power to order measures necessary to prevent spread and eliminate animal disease. This general power alone does not establish a currently active housing order.
- The welfare ordinance allows departures from husbandry and handling provisions where necessary to comply with disease-control rules. It does not activate an order or waive every welfare duty.
- The captured 2025.544 bird-flu ordinance was time-limited to 31 March 2026. Current housing and control-zone status remains unknown.

Small-flock welfare minimums
Rule identified for the scope below
Jurisdiction: Liechtenstein
Applies to: Domestic Liechtenstein welfare duties for keeping and using vertebrates, including noncommercial flocks, with the stated poultry and hen-specific requirements.
Outside this finding's scope
- Selected national requirements only. Annex dimensions and the supplemental husbandry ordinance are not reduced to a complete numeric checklist or property permission.
What the checked sources say
- Give animals sufficient suitable feed and water regularly, including every member of a group.
- Check animals and facilities as often as necessary; promptly remedy defects affecting welfare or take protective measures.
- Provide necessary weather protection where animals cannot adapt to the conditions.
- Housing must permit species-appropriate behaviour. Annexes 1–3 provide default minimum requirements, subject to the specified maintenance and temporary-event exceptions.
- For maintenance beyond replacement of individual housing elements, Article 10(2) requires assessment of whether the space can meet the listed new-stall minima. ALKVW may authorize deviations under Article 10(3), considering the keeper’s expenditure and animal welfare.
- At events, Article 30b permits slight deviations from Annexes 1–2 dimensions for up to four days, or up to eight days with sufficient daily movement or training. Equipment and lighting requirements still apply, and the climate must suit the animals.
- Social species must have suitable contact with members of their own species.
- Domestic poultry must have suitable litter on the house floor over at least 20% of the accessible indoor area throughout the light phase, except during the first two weeks of life.
- Domestic hens require protected, suitable individual or group nests with litter or soft inserts; plastic shells are also allowed for individual nests.
- Rearing, laying and parent-stock domestic hens require elevated perching places at different heights suited to their age and behaviour.
- Poultry rooms generally need at least 5 lux during daytime, except rest and retreat areas and laying nests. When cannibalism occurs, illumination may temporarily fall below 5 lux and daylight may be omitted; both changes must immediately be reported to ALKVW.
