  • No 2026 Colorado control area is shown as open. CDA's cases sheet (last updated 3/18/2026) gives control-area releases for Weld 18 (commercial, 3/4/2026) and Weld 22 (backyard poultry, 3/18/2026); the other 2026 backyard premises show NA in the Control Area Released column (all non-poultry), except Logan01 (backyard poultry), whose cell is blank; SitRep #86 gives Logan's control-area release as March 3, 2026.

Bringing birds or hatching eggs into Colorado

Colorado rule 8 CCR 1201-19 requires imported livestock (whether 'livestock' reaches poultry is not shown in the saved rule) to meet Colorado's species-specific import requirements (kept on CDA's website) and federal interstate rules; CVIs are void after 30 days. The poultry-specific requirements sit in CDA's Animal Import tool, which needs a form selection (not done). Import permits: (303) 869-9130. New World screwworm (emergency rule adopted October 9, 2026, effective through February 6, 2027; the rule names birds): animals from an NWS infested zone need the origin's exit clearance, wound treatment where needed, a CVI issued within 5 days with the screwworm statement and treatment details, an entry permit requested within 5 days before movement, and arrival inspection.

What the entry rules say
  • “Livestock imported into Colorado must comply with Colorado’s import requirements and also meet all federal interstate requirements.”

    Colorado Department of Agriculture · coloradosos.gov · Part 2.2.2

  • “A CVI shall be void thirty (30) days after the date of its issuance.”

    Colorado Department of Agriculture · coloradosos.gov · Part 2.1.7

  • “The reviewers also updated Part 2 to indicate that the CVI requirements apply to all animals, not just livestock.”

Colorado's New World screwworm emergency rule (adopted and effective October 9, 2026, through February 6, 2027

The rule names birds) requires warm-blooded animals from an NWS infested zone to meet the origin's exit requirements, have a CVI issued within 5 days with a screwworm-free statement and any treatment details, hold an entry permit requested within 5 days before movement, have open wounds treated, and be inspected on arrival; no animal with NWS myiasis may enter

In effect from October 9, 2026 · In force through February 6, 2027

  • No extended equine CVIs or commuter agreements from an infested zone; a standard CVI is required

What do I need to bring chickens or hatching eggs into Colorado?

Who do I call about sick or dead birds in Colorado?
Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), State Veterinarian's Office at (303) 869-9130. Report sick or dying birds there or to USDA at 1-866-536-7593. This page is not veterinary advice; follow your state veterinarian.
How current is this page?
We read Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), State Veterinarian's Office's notices on October 14, 2026. Whether each order is in force is worked out from its dates every time the page is rebuilt, at least once an hour, so an order never shows as in force after it ends.

What we couldn't confirm
  • Poultry import requirements not read: CDA's Animal Import tool needs a species form selection (POST); not submitted. See.
  • APHIS shows no Colorado flock detection after March 2, 2026 (to October 9, 2026).
  • The situation report is a Google Doc published by CDA; cited via the 'edit?usp=sharing' link CDA posts and saved from its plain-text export.
  • Vendor hosts (flag for reviewer): CDA publishes its situation reports as Google Docs (docs.google.com), the show guidance on Google Drive, the cases table as a published Google Sheet and the sick-bird report as Google Forms. Each is CDA's own document, linked from ag.colorado.gov pages (link lists saved: co-cda-hpai-poultry-links.txt, co-cda-release-show-guidance-links.txt).
  • CO-3 (moved from Current situation): SitRep #86 (May 8, 2026, the latest CDA posted) still headed six backyard premises 'Premises Quarantine Established' with no release line: Morgan 03 (confirmed December 12, 2025 per the SitRep; the sheet says 11/28/2025), Larimer 08, Boulder 02, Weld 19, Weld 20 (January-February 2026) and Weld 22 (notified February 26, confirmed March 2, 2026). Each was 'under a 120-day quarantine order'; counted from confirmation, those terms ran out between about April 11, 2026 (Morgan 03) and June 30, 2026 (Weld 22) (for comparison, Larimer 07 was released after 114 days and Logan 01 after 107). Whether they were released or extended is unknown; ask CDA (303) 869-9130. Weld 21 (a swan, reclassified by USDA as a wildlife detection) also had a 120-day order and no release line. Morgan 02's heading says 'established' while its text says released December 20, 2024.
  • Logan 01: SitRep #86 says its control area was released March 3, 2026, but CDA's cases sheet leaves the Logan01 'Control Area Released' cell blank; the status note uses the SitRep date. APHIS dates Logan 01's control-area release March 4, 2026, and Weld 22's March 17, 2026 (sheet: 3/18/2026), a one-day difference.
  • 2022 show emergency rule: CDA says it was set to expire June 30, 2022 and the Commission let it expire; the official code's editor's notes say the 2022 Part 14 emergency rules expired 07/28/2022 (probably a Secretary of State cleanup date; unconfirmed). Row keeps June 30.
  • 'Livestock' is not defined in the saved 8 CCR 1201-19, so Part 2.2.2's reach to poultry is unconfirmed; the 30-day CVI rule applies to all animals per the Part 16 statement of basis.
  • On January 29, 2026, the Acting Governor issued a verbal disaster declaration for HPAI in Weld County (SitRep #86); no restrictions on keepers stated, end not stated. History only.
  • No statewide show order was found on the pages checked October 14, 2026.
  • APHIS rows for Colorado: co-aphis-hpai-exporttocsv-co-rows.txt (latest March 2, 2026, Weld 22).
  • The October 9, 2026 NWS emergency rule text is read from CDA's Google Doc linked from ag.colorado.gov/NWS (vendor host; CDA's own document). The official CCR page (fetched October 14, 2026) still lists 06/10/2026 as the current version; the hold was removed because CDA's page gives the adopted rule's text and dates.
